We’ve designed a very special program for your child. At the YWCA, we are determined to provide all the elements that families feel are most important: lots of love and attention; stimulating activities; tons of fun! All of these elements are drawn together to create a clean, safe program where children can learn while they play, make new friends, and get the care they need to thrive. A place where they can explore, discover, and grow.
This may be your child’s first adventure away from home. It may also be your family’s first experience with the YWCA. We have designed this handbook to ease the transition, to answer some of your questions, and provide a fuller understanding of our philosophy and program.
Our program will provide many opportunities for family involvement and communication throughout the year. Together, we can create a rich and rewarding experience for your child - a wonderful beginning that will last a lifetime.
Learning through Play
Children learn best when they are enjoying their experiences, and simply having fun. This makes play a very natural tool in teaching the young child. Through play, children can take on different roles, experiment with cause and effect, and work as a team to solve problems through trial and error.
Children can develop confidence in discovering all the things they can do. Through exploratory learning and play, your child’s self-image will be built by experiencing success in terms he/she can understand. Our program hopes to guide your child toward these developmental milestones;
Your child will develop a positive self image
Your child will initiate and follow through activities independently
Your child will impact the people and objects in the environment
Your child will develop skills for coping with
developmental issues
Your child will control impulses and channel them into more appropriate modes of expression
Your child will relate positively to others, forging mutual understanding and acceptance of different perspectives
Your child will use symbol systems to represent experiences, ideas, and feelings
Your child will develop a healthy and physically competent body
Your child will use appropriate materials as an outlet for self-expression or recreating experiences
Physical Development
Your child’s physical development is an integral part of the program. The center incorporates several outlets which promote a healthy, active childhood:
Daily opportunities for vigorous play
Opportunities to develop gross motor skills through movement education, simple games and tumbling
Nutritious and varied snacks
Rest periods designed to meet developmental needs
Health and Safety education
Cognitive Development
Our daily schedule provides an enhanced curriculum within a structured, yet flexible, environment. The programs seeks to develop specific skills to prepare your child for elementary learning. The following lists review curriculum goals for each classroom/age group. Please remember that every child learns at his or her own pace; the children are not expected to accomplish these goals simultaneously.
